The Great Art of Knowing (David Gatten, 2004)

21st Century Limited is series of six programmes comprising films and videos selected from the results of the Film Comment poll “A Decade in the Dark—Avant-Garde Film and Video 2000-2009.” The poll gathered the opinions of forty-six filmmakers, curators and film critics regarding the best film and vdeo works form the first decade of the 21st century (2000-2009), the 'best' filmmakers and their thoughts about promising 'emerging' artists. The programmes will be screened in three dates: July 11, 18 and 25 at the Walter Reader Theater in New York. The first date will have in-person appearances of filmmakers David Gatten and Jeanne Liotta

L'ouragan scopique. Hommage a Paolo Gioli

L’operatore perforato (Paolo Gioli, 1979)

Under the title "L'ouragan scopique" (The scopic hurricane), the Cinémathèque française dedicates four programmes (June 27th & July 23rd) to the vertical cinema of italian experimental filmmaker and fotographer Paolo Gioli (Sarzano, 1942). The retrospective will cover Gioli's entire film career, from his beginnings in the early 70s, when he was in contact with the seminal Cooperativa Cinema Indipendente, to his latest films.

Those unable to attend the screenings, can also discover Gioli's cinema through the DVD editions 'Film di Paolo Gioli' (Raro Video) and 'Paolo Gioli - Il cinema dell'impronta' (Kiwido).

The first edition of the (S8) Peripheral Film Festival to be held next June 3-6 in A Coruña, Spain, aims to 'combine the new cinematographic trends... with the temporary and historical trail that the cinematographic format has been providing since its appearance'. During its four days, the newly-born festival packs an incredible programme featuring partial restrospectives of Iván Zulueta and Eugenio Granell's s8 film works, a session of Spanish contemporary s8 experimental films focusing on the work of David Domingo, videoinstallations by Maria Cañas and Alberte Pagán and a 16mm projectors performance by Bruce McClure.

Media City 2010

Canada's Media City Festival reaches its 16th edition next May 25th, presenting over 75 film and video works from all over the world during its 5-day run. Canadian Film and Video and Regional Artists programmes will feature works from national and local filmmakers such as Daichi Saito, John Price or Chris Kennedy, while six international programmes will offer the chance to see new works by veteran artists like Ute Aurand, Julie Murray and Vincent Grenier along with new talents like Mati Diop, Arnaud Gerber and Alexandra Cuesta. This year's edition will also feature two partial retrospectives dedicated to Johan van der Keuken and Friedl Kubelka, including a talk with the later and an exhibition of her photographs.
