A tribute afternoon in memory of Shirouyasu Suzuki, to celebrate his work in almost half a century behind the camera and to reconnect with the films made by his son Nonoho Suzuki and his son's wife Yuri Muraoka.

The screening will take place in Parma at Borgo Santa Brigida 5/a Theatre from 2pm to 5pm. Back into the dimension of the so called kojin eiga with the diary films of Shirouyasu Suzuki, one of the most well-known and influential authors in the field of personal and private filmmaking. Little known outside Japan, his audiovisual production and his poetry have inspired numerous artists of subsequent generations, thanks also to his teachings at the Tama Art University and the Image Forum in Tokyo.

Between the 60s and 70s he was a camera operator for NHK while at the same time he exposed with his own camera meters and meters of 16mm film, capturing fragments of the places he visited and focusing in particular on moments of everyday life and family intimacy. We will screen two of his most important diary films, "Impressions of a Sunset" and "15 Days”, made respectively in 1975 and 1980.

Despite the director's passing in September 2022, we decided to bring this selection to Italy for the first time and share it with everyone on the occasion of his birthday, to pay homage to the vitality of Shirouyasu Suzuki and reflect on the legacy left to us by his first person contemplative perspective. A reunion also with the people closest to the filmmaker, his family.

Again, from a totally intimate perspective, we present the most recent "Aburidashi Assortment: Video Letters written in Invisible Ink", the work of Shirouyasu's second son, Nonoho and "The Eyeball Person", the latest film by Yuri Muraoka. Finally a private short film by Kazushi Ozawa dedicated to the memory of his master Shirouyasu Suzuki will be excusively projected. We are inviting you to gather once again at our theatre and immerse yourselves in the worlds of Shirouyasu, Nonoho, Yuri and Kazushi, recalling first of all the exciting works of a unique and central author in the history of kojin eiga.

We thank Nonoho Suzuki for his invaluable support in helping select the films for this event. All works are digital copies made available by Nonoho Suzuki, Yuri Muraoka and Kazushi Ozawa.

The ticket price for the event is €7.
