Sonic Acts: The Dark Universe
February 21-24, Amsterdam

The 2013 edition of Sonic Acts, the festival that explores the 'developments at the intersection of art, music and science', begins tomorrow (February 21-24) in Amsterdam. Titled The Dark Universe, this fifteenth edition comes filled with music and expanded cinema performances, including Makino Takashi's latest [2012]3D, William Raban's 1977 performance Wave Formations or Rose Kallal's 16mm abstract work Apeiron. Several screenings and installations include showings of works by Bruce Conner, Peter Tscherkassky, Aldo Tambellini, Joost Rekveld, Jürgen Reble and Nenad Popov & Klara Ravat, among others.

The inexhaustible passion for film frames and the compositional processes of these minute particles in significant structures unites artists, film/video-makers and musicians, represented in the Independent Film Show 12th edition involved in the materialization of visionary and poetic interactive sensory experiences to suggest and amplify new and unexpected relations.

The first program reveals the incredible creative potential achieved through the selective collecting of images and the brilliant assembly of these immobile and ethereal fragments in imaginative and introspective pathways into the macro cosmos. The films Alpsee (1994) and Phantom (2001), realized by Matthias Müller experimenting with various analogue techniques of filming and composition, illustrate through his distinctive visual vocabulary the transition into childhood, the tensions and moments of calm addressed, and painful educational development. Together with Christoph Girardet, chapters # 4 Why Don’t You Love Me? and # 5 Bedroom of Phoenix Tapes (1999) and the films Locomotive (2008) and Meteor (2011) explore a wide variety of cinematic representations in search of established codes and surprising digressions, reinforcing their creative energy, vitality and emotion.

Two playful performances redefine the audiovisual medium in an unexpected and refreshing way. Filmmaker Hangjun Lee (South Korea) - who performed at Bozar in 2011 together with Jérôme Noetinger - is back with a piece that examines the sculptural qualities of four 16 mm projectors used as musical instruments, amplified by four guitar amps... without projecting any image. Multidisciplinary artist Benjamin Altermatt (Chile/Italy/Germany) invents an intimate and hypnotic journey built around VHS footage he shot during a trip to China, which is mixed on the spot and combined with sound recorded on audio cassettes. A monitor is the sole visual and sound source of his performance.

'My projection performances celebrate the incandescent beauty of 16 mm projectors and their role in driving desirable reactions in the metabolism of energy from one form to another. Light is modulated at the front gate by the limbic roll and chatter of loops patterned with emulsion. Once screened for the eye these patterns are commented on by the optical sound system from every corner of the room. Itinerate, the two projector works that accompany me on this tour accommodate themselves to any space and are measured only by attention. The territory of provisional occupancy by this work is well known but any familiar feature can become distorted making orientation difficult and likely to be abandoned. Luís Macías and Adriana Vila present a night of expanded cinema focusing on three converging threads; found footage performances, light environments created through film loops, and movie-less projection. The project is conceived in the form of changeable installations and / or film performances made of found home movies. Projected as simultaneous overlapping stories, Tejido Conectivo focuses on the creative recycling of unknown memories, and celebrates the materiality of cinema making visible the hole process of projection and manual intervention, creating the appearance of visual and audio atmospheres live.

O' and Die Schachtel inaugurate Atelier Impopulaire, a new cycle of events starting from March, curated by Pia Bolognesi and Giulio Bursi.
 
Atelier Impopulaire is a contamination of research practices, editorial and site-specific curatorship that arises from direct collaboration with the artists. In its first phase, Atelier Impopulaire will focus on the study and reinterpretation of Structural Cinema, Avant-garde, Performative and Expanded, to address cross-cultural path on the film device in its experimental forms, through a program that includes performances and screenings of artists and filmmakers of different generations: Bruce McClure, Morgan Fisher and Ben Russell.

Atelier Impopulaire starts next March 1 with a seminar by Bruce McLure 'The 16 mm for Film & New Media Lecture' at the Department of Film and New Media NABA, Milan, and a performance by the artist on Friday, March 2 at 20:30 in the O' space.

Investigator of the cinematic apparatus, architect and 'performer of light and darkness', among the most prominent names in American Expanded Cinema, host of the most famous festivals in the world (Rotterdam, Toronto, New York) Bruce McClure (NY, 1959) presents a performance projection for the O' space and the cycle Atelier Impopulaire. "Its events immerse the viewer in the complete darkness of the room, lit by flicker shots(the pulsing image of the projector light): sound beats and visual loops synaesthetically drag the viewer into a space dominated mostly by the sound and the force of the flashing and flickering lights of the image. Darkness and light are palpated, you can taste and see: a battery of 16mm projectors, modificated by him" -for the performance of Milan he will use two simultaneously-projected film loops generating cones of light which are then synchronized with sounds and noises (...). Mixer and electronic pedals help him to create a sound / optical universe with high-impact and fully immersive. His live performances are very close to the expanded cinema, a film that dominates the space beyond the screen, not the fictional diegesis of the film, but the universe palpable and effective, though virtual, a room made from darkness and light, a shared space between the projectionist and the viewer, between those who create and those who receive the light " (by Massimiliano Fierro).

Mono no aware reaches its fifth edition next Decemebr 3 with an evening filled of film-only expanded cinema performances. Promoting the cinematic experience, the events include one part of live film projection and another part of live performance elements such as musical performances, dance, poetry, installations, multiple-projections and audience participation. Expanded Architecture 2011 - Call for proposals

As part of the Sydney Architecture Festival, Expanded Architecture 2011 invites proposals for collaborative,site-specific moving image projections.Selected participants will be part of an exciting one night only, exhibition in the inspirational foyer space of CarriageWorks, Sydney on Wednesday October 26th 2011.

The invitation is open to artists, film-makers, architects, design professionals, students and anyone who is interested in the intersection of architecture + art. Submissions should propose site-specific moving-image projection or filmic installations, responding to the foyer of CarriageWorks, or its immediate urban context.  We encourage proposals involving inter-disciplinary collaboration.
